I had already tried to go into console. It wouldn't give my friend the screen. THank you for the document. Unfortunately my friend doesn't need the the speaking version. I already have a speaking version on my computer and mine works quite well. I used the original non-final version of the HOWTO. Since I was asking him to type the commands over the phone, he must have been typing something wrong. I had him try it again several times. I was successful in replacing the XF86Config file at last. the monitor is back. Thank you for the help.
