Hello,

I'm helping a friend of mine install Redhat 7.2. The installation went
fine. By he accidently skipped the Xconfigurator. After the installation,
we started teh process of ocnfiguring the Xconfigurator by using the
utility. The probe found the correct card, and teh correct memory. It also
suggested the horizontal and the vertical rates. Since it is an old card
and an old monitor, we suggested he tchage the settings to lower than
suggested. But when testing the system, his screen started wen gray, and
his monitor light fluctuates between green and Megenta.

He doesn't have speech installed. So I helped him login without the screen,
and tried to replace the /etc/X11/XF86Config with a backup version. That
doesn't work. The bootdisk created after the installation doesn't work.
When he boots up the system, he gets the same type of behavior from his
screen. He can go into windows without a problem.

I did the following.
Had my friend login with his login and pass.
then had him login as root with the password
just to be certain, I had him change the permitions on /etc/X11/XF86Config
to 777 so that he can delete it.
used rm to remove the file.
copied the original config from a backup directory to /etc/X11/.
the results are the same though.

Does the system need to be reinstalled? It's not a problem if it does. He
just installed it.

Thank you for any suggestions.

First of all, it's not unusual to have video issues with
Xconfiguration, especially for older hardware. You should collect
some data--about the video card, it's memory, and about the
monitor involved. Then, do some searching and reading on line
about this hardware. Also, run Xconfigurator again and do
different settings.

There's no reason to reinstall, but you may need drivers you did
not get with your last install--so do some looking around on the
net.

Also, you might want to upgrade to RH 7.3 which is current,
though I don't have high hopes that this video issue is related
to the RH version.

Hello,

Thank you for the help.

I forgot to mention in the previous mail that before running the
Xconfigurator, all the data was collected and I used the settings
accordingly. Same situation for the monitor. Luckily, my friend was smart
enough to keep all the docs shipped with his original machine.

I would love to run Xconfigurator again. The only problem is that he is not
running a speech install and nothing is coming up on the screen. I think
I'll probably have to reinstall. It might just be worthwhile to spend the
time to do the installation again.

I'l do some reading on the net.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, certainly it doesn't hurt to practice installing. And, a
good time to do that is when there's nothing very critical yet on
your system.

However, that may not fix the problem.

Have your friend try pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1

That should bring up a text console login. Did you say you've
done this already?

Since speech is of interest, I'm attaching our latest, not yet
released, version of our installation HOWTO. Just a few links
aren't working yet, which is why it isn't released just yet. I
expect to go live with this very soon.

Hello,

Thank you very much for tyring to help with this problem.

I had already tried to go into console. It wouldn't give my friend the
screen.

THank you for the document. Unfortunately my friend doesn't need the the
speaking version. I already have a speaking version on my computer and mine
works quite well. I used the original non-final version of the HOWTO.

Since I was asking him to type the commands over the phone, he must have
been typing something wrong. I had him try it again several times. I was
successful in replacing the XF86Config file at last. the monitor is back.

Thank you for the help.

All's well that ends well, I'm sure.

Glad to hear this has ended well!
