A mailing list has been started for the development and implementation
of a freeware Optical Character Recognition program for Linux.
Scanner support for Linux is under rapid development, and there are
already some applications that support it, such as GIMP; OCR is one
major application missing from Linux, and has long been on the FSF's
project list, as well.

The last time I checked out this listserv, they were getting ready to release a
copy of the ocr package. They are quite open with suggestions and do not want t
o forget anyone while building the interface.

Yes, it does exist. I use hpscanpbm for my HP ScanJet IIcx.

I've tried xocr several times, but I never got anything readable out
of it. I'm still looking for ocr under Linux myself.

Jos.
