I've been practicing with a zipslack installation, and I'm considering
going for a purer Linux. I'd like to work with Java. I installed a
JDK (Java Development Kit) on my zipslack-- it installed okay, but I
couldn't do anything with it. I'm too green at Linux to have much
hope of unraveling the difficulties, but I read that the Linux JDK was
developed under Debian, so I am considering installing Debian and
trying the JDK again. If it weren't for the JDK issue, I think I'd
prefer going to Slackware.

My questions: Are any speakup users using a version of JDK? If so,
what version and distribution? I'll appreciate any tips.

What did you want to do? All command-line / text-output
based java apps should work (there are practically none...).
And GUI java stuff does *NOT* work under Linux,
because there is still no working Java-enabled screen reader.
IBM wrote the SVK, but they only supported Windows and Solaris.

Hello Roberet,
If you are talking about the latest ZipSlack, v8.1, you must know that
there is probably no make no other dev elements on it, since I have used
a zipslack to build BrlZip, i wasn't able to compile brltty, but v8.0
still contains a development part.
Maybe this can resolve your problem, but of course it's better to switch
to a real-full Gnu/Linux distro.

True. But there is charva that can, in some circumstances, interface to a
gui app:

http://www.pitman.co.za/projects/charva/

And, gnopernicus, the GNOME screen reader is coming along and will support
Java.

So, while the stars may net yet be perfectly aligned, it may be a good
time to get comfortable in Linux in order to take advantage of the Java
support which is in the queue.

PS: You may want to look at our Red Hat installation HOWTO for the generic
support it offers about making the transition from Windows to Linux, even
if you intend to install Debian or Slackware. It's at:

Yes, I figured it would be best to run a more complete distro if I want to
do Java development. I'm really rushing things a little, because I really
need to get more Linux fundamentals under my belt before launching into
anything as involved as a JDK.

Thanks.

I wanted to write and run some applications. The compiler (javac) wouldn't
run. The problem may have been a simple as revising the PATH variable, but
I decided to wait until I had a more robust Linux than zipslack-- figured
the file zipslack file system might cause Java some problems.

So far, except for a couple of applets, I've just written apps that run in
a DOS box-- I planned to work mostly with console mode programs under
Linux-- web crawlers, math programs, text manipulation, etc.

I hadn't seen anything about Java on this list, but hoped some other
blinuxers were at least tinkering with Java.

Thanks for feedback.
