'mc' stands for midnight commander. It is a ncurses based file manager
(typically two areas from where you can do files copy and so on),
extended to view/edit files, filtering, FTP browsing (like if the
remote stuff was local) and so on. It is really used on console-only
systems, especially if gpm (mouse manager) is running.
