Hi carin,
I would recommend
www.linux-speakup.org.
This is a screen reader for linux. I got it to work with redhat. It supports
only a limited number of hardware synths but it talks from boot to shutdown.
What kind of synth does he have?
As far as a distribution of linux. I recommend redhat. this will work with
speakup. It is even possible for him to install linux with speakup.

Hi. I will just say right now that I will probably seem really dumb on this

for Linux? I've seen a lot about emacspeak, but will that do the job for
all linux utilities? Where can I get it for him? I went to a couple
places, expecting exe's, yep, I've spent too long with windows, and can't
figure out what to download. Is ithard to learn? A lot of the descriptions
I found sound like they're speaking Greek, and I thought I was good at
computer stuff. I tried to sign up to the emacspeak list, but can't tell if
I'm on or not.

emacspeak has limits on what it will work with based on the emacs
construction since emacspeak runs as an application on top of the emacs
system. There are applications once installed properly that can fill in
for other text-based linux applications. Send email to
emacspeak-request@cs.vassar.edu and ask if you're subscribed, it's a human
at that address so you'll get an answer back.

Hi Karen,
I would start out with Speakup basically what it is a kernel based speech
program what in the linux world also call screen readers. There are
different flavors of Linux however, such as Redhat
http://www.redhat.com and my personal favorite basically because of the
upgrade capability Debian
http://www.debian.org this is only a couple there are more like Slackware
http://www.slackware.com I believ you would have to also go to the Linux how
tos at
http://www.linuxdocs.org. This should get you started.
