Hello list,

As some of you may know the F123Light project came to an end for lack of
funds.

But, like a phoenix rising from ashes, a new project is born and
continues F123: Stormux, developed by a small team led by Billy Wolfe
aka Storm Dragon.

Let's quote its home page https://stormux.org/

> Stormux aims to bring a low cost, fully accessible to the blind, general
> purpose computer to the masses. Stormux is configured to be accessible
> out of the box. All you need do is write the image, insert the card, and
> plug it in to get started.
>
> Stormux is optimized for the Raspberry Pi 4. It runs the Mate desktop
> and is powered by Arch Linux.
>
> Stormux provides access to the console using the Fenrir screen reader,
> and the desktop using Orca.

Stormux is in a very early stage, but images are already available here:
https://stormux.org/downloads/

If you want to try, it is highly recommended to register to the mailing
list, so that you can get help and provide feedback.
Information: https://groups.io/g/stormux
To subscribe: stormux+subscribe@groups.io

You can support financially the project: Storm has now a Patreon page
for that, as he recently wrote on the Stormux mailing list:
https://groups.io/g/stormux/message/88
I encourage you to do so, so that the Stormux project can continue to
develop itself.

Why, as the developer of Slint, another accessible Linux distribution,
do I spread the word about Stormux? Because:
1. We do not compete. Slint is for x86_64 computers only so far.
2. It's good that blind computer users have a choice.
3. I have a high esteem for Storm and the Stormux team, and we help each
other for the mutual benefit of our projects.

Best regards,
Didier

I'm very happy to see this project continued, and I have already started working on the social media aspect and marketing and promotion. Stormux now has a Telegram channel that will announce news and release notes,
https://t.me/stormux
as well as a linked general discussion group at
https://t.me/stormux_discussion
Stormux will also soon be available on most of the usual social media channels including Facebook and Twitter. I'm happy to work with this project, and will do my best to keep everyone interested updated regarding its status and features.

reddit would probably be another good platform for stormux. Using pip3
install tuir as root will get you a terminal client for reddit if you
haven't got one yet.

I tried Tuir, and its originator, neither are very accessible. Unless there’s some flag or command line option I’ve not heard about, or if Fenrir has some way of dealing with all that.

First thing to do with tuir is run tuir --copy-config.
Then run tuir --copy-mailcap.
In ~/.config/tuir/tuir.cfg
Is the configuration file.
You can turn on ascii in the configuration and turn on monochrome and
disable colors.
Those three changes may help your accessibility.

I've had pretty good luck reading the regular Reddit website, so I'll look into putting Stormix on Reddit. Thanks for the suggestion.

why not create the discussion list somewhere more open like groups.io?
After all, I imagine you desire reaching individuals who have been
dissatisfied with other Linux experiences, so they can discover that your
product works for them?

Keep in mind that reddit has undergone some changes lately which may
impact previously successful tools.

The Telegram group is in addition to the email list on groups.io, it isn't meant to replace it. Telegram works better than email for some, because it is realtime text and voice chat. Nothing that existed is going away. New methods of discussion are being added.

email lists appeal to a smaller audience than any of the other social
platforms which is why social platforms are used these days.

And then there are people, like me, who prefer e-mail to modern social
media, hence just one reason why it's good to have multiple options
for communication.

That depends on your market.
And of course if you wish to preach to the choir so to speak, or reach
those who may not already be using a product like yours.
Add the increased risk of privacy on social media, and again putting all
your eggs in one basket limits prospects.
to be on social media a person has to already have found a technology
combination that works for them. If such is the case, unless it is a
hobby why would they be interested in what you are offering?

Some of who social media may reach need no technology combinations for
themselves. They may need technology combinations for older relatives
though and a raspberry pi is an inexpensive route to accessibility.

Just because someone who might use Stormux already has a combination
of technologies that allows them to stumble upon social media
promotion for Stormux doesn't necessarily mean there couldn't be other
tasks their setup makes difficult or impossible... even being able to
access said social media promotion is no guarantee that said access
comes easily to them.
