If you can, find the experimental Bookshare options, and turn on EPUB downloading. Then, if you use Emacspeak, you can put it in your EBooks folder and read it with that. If not, I'm sure Firefox can read them with an addon. If not, use Pandoc to convert them to whatever format you can open, and read it like that.

With Bookshare books, when you unzip them, you have a pile of
files. One is the xml file, the content of the book. There's another
one, named daisyTransform.xsl.
You can use that xsl file to turn the xml into html, with xsltproc:
xsltproc daisyTransform.xsl Book.xml > Book.html
The xsltproc command is probably in a package named libxslt or something
similar.
I wrote a little script to convert html to text with elinks, using all
the options and settings I prefer. It also produces output in UTF-8, so
Unicode characters are faithfully preserved.
http://the-brannons.com/useful-scripts/cmb-html2txt
By default, elinks indents everything by 3 spaces, which is kind of
annoying. So you'll want the line
set document.browse.margin_width = 0
in your config file, either /etc/elinks/elinks.conf or
$HOME/.elinks/elinks.conf.
If there's an existing document.browse.margin_width line, just modify
that one.
Good luck,

How do you save it as text using Lynx? I read Bookshare books in brf
format, but sometimes it's better to have, say, a technical book as
straight text.

Speaking only for myself, I have a suggestion.
unzip the file and see if loading the XML in Firefox works for you.
this is not how i read them personally. but if you want to use Firefox that
might do the trick.
I personally load the XML into lynx, save it as text, and read it in
wordperfect, but that is me.

Bookshare uses .xml files for its daisy markup, but, yeah--u should be
able to use any browser that supports reading xml to do so. Some
browsers seem to parse it better than others.

I found a .xml file that it seems to be able to read. I'm gonna try that one.

Once you have unzipped a Daisy text book, look for any XHTML files it contains. These should contain the text, and web browsers should be able to allow you to read and navigate these files.

The mp3 option won't work, because it's reading various linux commands as abbreviations for other things, and that's not helpful. Converting to brf is
obviously not the answer either. I have no html files or options to have it saved as html.

Daisy files are zipped in bookshare, so you'll need something like
7zip to open them. Additionally, you'll need something that can read
them on your Linux box. 7zip & a daisy player available at:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/dbr/files/latest/download
may prove helpful.
