Cool. I'll have to try this out. Can you run X OK on top of the emacs
shell?

Judged by his life Emerson comes very near our best ideal of humanity....[T]he
penalty of having an opinion of his own and expressing it was a serious one,
and he accepted it as cheerfully as any of Queen Mary's martyrs accepted his
fiery baptism. - from _Ralph Waldo Emerson_, by Oliver Wendell Holmes, 1886.

Some people may find this useful:
to start up programs on VC's, without having to login on every one,
remove/replace the getty's in /etc/inittab (leave one), and use the
dynamic-vc package from ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/utils/console
and commands like:
open -c 3 -- su -
open -c 4 -- su -
open -c 5 -- su -
open -c 6 -- su - gps
open -c 6 -- su - gps -c openwin &
ie I login as root, run that script and it does the rest.
I'm even considering removing the need to login as root,
and have it simply boot into that mode.

Not to be dumb here, but what does this do for increased
accessability? What are the advantages of dynamic-vc?
Thanks,

you definitely wont be able to run X on top of the shell running
inside emacs.
when you do M-x shell what you get is a comint buffer and that does
not do proper terminal emulation either. For terminal emulation you'll
need to use the term package --type M-x term ret
But that wont let you run X.
