Is there any good TV/radio tuner card that I can use in linux? Does the
winTV stuff work?
If anyone has used a winTV in the other M OS, how is the software as far as
working with wineyes? I want a linux-compatible one so that if the software
that comes with isn't that friendly, I can use linux and cron to record
with it probably.

I have an ATI USB TV tuner which I use in Windows. The software is
extremely inaccessible with JFW, SuperNova and WinEyes. About the only
features which are usable are the volume and changing channels. The
last time I looked for Linux drivers for this device they didn't exist.
When I contacted them, ATI wasn't at all helpful so don't think I'd
recommend this one.

Absolutely. Start with the files in /usr/src/linux/Documentation,
particularly devices.txt. Then, look at the hardware compatibility lists
on sites like Redhat.com, etc.

Cool, was thinking the Wintv go series, don't know if they have FM though,
or AM for that matter. I figured this would eliminate the need for a
separate boombox for radio, and with TV functionality too, an extra bonus.

Haupauge WinTV works with linux. Most cards with Btree 9xx (I think, it's
at home) chipset supposedly work. I was not able to get the FM working
though. It was changing the frequencies but no sound out of it.

You probably need to hook a cable to the TV card's line output, and set
that to play back with your sound card some how.

USB and linux is going to be hard. I was thinking about the haupauge winTV
pci type cards that work in linux, but I want AM/FM too. I do like AM
sometimes.

TV card is connected to sound card with a cable. I have Hauppauge WinTV
PCI card with TV, FM radio, and S video input for external camera. The
card has Brooktree chipset BT848 for handling video.
Different Linux distributions handle it differently. I found that Mandrake
is the best to take advantage of this card and other somewhat exotic
peripherals.

Does it have AM radio? Is there a compatible card that does, or a software
controllable a/b switch so I can use a separate radio only card, and
schedule switching as the beginning of record script? Like for sample
#!/bin/sh
switch a
whatever program with arguments to do recording here
The trouble with two devices is the need for two inputs.

No, just FM. Can't expect everything on one card. Radio, TV and whatever
else has to do with radio waves is difficult to design for PC with so much
noise inside a typical PC.

You would be better off if you buy a good scanner or a receiver that
covers wide range of frequencies with option for computer control over
RS-232 and setup recording with generic sound card.

Oh, anything that's linux compatible? I pretty much want AM and FM, but
would take the TV feature too, what would I use that would cause recording
to stop automatically? For the TV stuff, was going to use the vcr program
from the linuxdoc vcr howto, and it's able to be set to record a certain
time length. My machine happens to have two physical com ports anyways, so
that can work.

Well, if you really want to go way out for all kinds of goodies, you might
want to think in terms of something external to the computer that can
still be controlled from your computer. I haven't done this myself, but
have it on pretty good authority that the radios from Icom can be driven
from linux. Look at http://www.icomamerica.com.

And what kind of recording software would I use for telling it to record
for 3 hours and then quit? Will three hours, or however many hours always
take the same amount of disk space that I could use quota to terminate
recording?

I use Icom pcr-1000 in Linux with Icomlib
http://www.philtered.net/icomlib.phtml
and it works quite nicely. I have connected it into the soundcard via
mic input but never actually recorded anythin, just listened.
I think it is however possible to limit record time with dd or head
commands, somethin like:
head -c28800000 /dev/audio > radio.au
should record one hour with tolerable sound quality.

I thought the icom stuff was ham radio stuff though, maybe not though,
online I was found antena tuners, but that probaly not quite the thing.

I have a usb mouse and an iomega 31475 cd burner that's also usb on my red
hat 7.0 system. redhat finds the mouse fine, and it can be used and it
also finds the usb drive and makes it click on boot up but then it can't
identify it further and leaves it unuseable after boot up. That leaves me
wondering what red hat uses to interrogate usb devices. If there was
something like setserial I might be able to figure out how to get that
drive working. If lspci could be used like grep so you could focus in on
one particular device I might be able to get information on the drive that
way. We were talking about tape drives before the shellworld.net hack,
and later I tried using the taper program if it's installed it may only
be a matter of telling it what port you hung your tape drive on and you
get a menu driven backup restore interface. Interestingly, it said
magnetic tape drive not found use the -t option when I started it up so
red hat isn't even with kudzu all that effective in detecting parallel
port tape drives. When it comes up it tells me I have an unknown class
device tapedrive on lP0.

Well this is pretty sketchy, but I'm guessing you need the ftape driver,
and a rundown on how to get it working. The ftape driver modules Red Hat
ships are hopelessly out of date (stock kernel distribution -- old, old, old).
Here's a couple of sites that can help (you'll no doubt have to get
the unstable version -- the "stable" one is not really usable).
Ftape site:

Here's a vendor that has helped with instructions on getting things
working, but I don't know if they have kept things up to date:

People buy MicroShaft for compatibility, but get incompatibility and
instability instead. This is award winning "innovation". Find
out how MS holds your data hostage with "The *Lens*"; see
"CyberSnare" at http://www.netaction.org/msoft/cybersnare.html
