(I sent this to linux-newbie, speakup, and blind-l. It was suggested that
I also include this list.)

Subject: linux braille campaign and question

1. I don't know whether or not there are any other avid braille users on
this list, but I am planning to start a campaign to get National Braille
Press to put a linux book in braille. They did have a pamphlet on simple
Unix commands, but it's gone and they don't seem to think they can redo
it, though I'm going to push for that too. If any one else is interested
in this idea, you might go to nbp.org and find somebody to pester--I mean
encourage--regarding the need for a linux publication in braille. I know
ideas are rather diverse, but if some of us could come up with one book
that we thought would cover the basics without favoring one distribution
and/or becoming quickly out-of-date, we might carry more weight if we
could agree on a recommendation of what to publish.
2. I did discover a book at the regional libraries which may or may not
be available--these braille computer books have a way of disappearing and
this was a 1984 book. I'm not sure how much of it would be useful for a
linux user. It's a training book on senix. I may order it if it's
available just to look at it. Can anybody tell me if there would probably
be commands and/or instructions in such a book which I could transfer to
linux? Even if this has limited use, though, I don't think it precludes
the need for a current book in braille.

You might like to write to a publisher like O'Reilly, who have looked at
producing "Open Source books" - they may be very helpful. You could also
loook at asking someone to print the linux documentation that comes with
linux.

O'Reilly publishes books on CD ROIM that are quite accessible with a minor
amount of tinkering. Titles available on CD ROM include books on Perl and
on Unix.

I've set up my pppd to the freeatlast.com pop server and am
telneting into my old shell account.

The only problem was that freeatlast.com would not let me register
over the phone or by email. My wife finally dusted off an old laptop
with a flakey drive we no longer use and ran the freeatlast.exe
software on that. During the registration process she recorded
the username, password, dialup number and DNS addresses. That
was enough to let me configure my ppp-on script and update my
/etc/resolv.conf file with the nameserver addresses.

The only oddity in the process is that freeatlast requires you to enter
your fully specified freeatlast email address during the POP server
ppp login process. That is instead of 'myname' you need to enter
'myname@freeatlast.com'.

In any case freeatlast.com beats the stuffing out of freewwwweb.com
(who, by the way STILL has nothing but busy signals...i just tried again..)

The page is hard to find on the site to register with netscape in windows,
I probably don't have a local dialup, as I live in a small town.
