Is there any easy to use program that allows one to send streaming
audio over the internet in linux? I'm tired of those hard to use graphical
programs in windows that don't really do what I'd like. I want a program
that works good with speakup. Also, I want it to allow me to specify times
to play certain things over the stream. I want it to not pause so long
between songs. I would also like to be able to record shows at certain
times from the internet, either from media player streams, realaudio, or
mp3-shoutcast streams. I was thinking of a script that would play a song,
sleep for a few seconds less than the duration of the song and continue
playing the next songs. I don't really know how to do stuff like that
though, especially when the time stuff comes in to specify to cut off
what's playing, or wait until it's done and play it. It'd be too hard to
play every song and time it to see how long it lasts to subtract a few
seconds to make the script, but harder still to remember the times to write
scripts to play it in the future. I find that if I do play commands one
after another, with my sblive sound card, I hear the songs all played at
once, I really don't want that. What program does this type of thing that's
speech friendly debian linux 2.2? I found a radio program, called radio,
but it deceived me, it was for controlling radio tuner cards, not what I
had in mind. I found icecast, but there's not much of an interface to it to
do much with, windblows is needed to connect to it to feed the stream in,
and I'll have to relay it to a free net station provider called
live365.com, so I'm limited pretty much to streaming mp3. Is there an easy
way to put live content in the stream, like you can in windows? Is it
possible to make it record from the mike and mp3 source at the same time,
so I don't have to edit config files and reboot every time I want to
switch, or get the annoying click when you do it?

Take a look at icecast. I don't have the url off-hand, but you should be
able to get it by searching http://www.freshmeat.net.
I haven't used this program personally, but it may do what you want.

If you're an oister, then don't let your perl get away from you.

I found it before, but it seems like just a server to carry the content
from some client. What I need is an interface to autoselect and play the
content to the live365 server in linux that does what I need it to do. When
I installed icecast it just appears to be a daemon that needs something to
connect to it, how can I control it without knowing the length of the song
so if I put play commands in the shell script it doesn't start every song
in the list at the same time? That's what I get with an sblive. I use the
alsa drivers, and it won't let two mp3's overlap in to one another, when I
play the second one, it makes a big pause when it cuts the first one off,
how do I fix that?

You said you're using Debian? Icecast comes in two packages, the
server and the client (or feeder). You should install
"icecast-client", I _THINK_ it'll let you do what you want.

Hm, what mp3 player are you using? Ever considered feeding your mp3
player via STDIN? It would let you play songs one after the other
without having to worry about what's going on...

I use mpg123 or freeamp. It often won't play an mp3 and a wave at the same
time, but it will play lots of waves at a time. I actually need to connect
to their shoutcast compliant server. How do I do live assist with it, so I
can talk through the mike and then go to the next song or something? Doing
the cat command on an mp3 displays it as binary to the screen, not really
what I want, I want it to play, not display binary code on the screen.
I thought standard input is the screen, which means it speaks it through my
double talk, and that doesn't know enough to make the audio out of it.

Well, you want to pipe the output from cat to the player:
$ cat *mp3 |mpg123 -

not sure if this will meet your needs, but streamripper will save
songs to a file (figuring out each song's id as it goes) and will also
pipe to standard out. You can rip and listen by piping out into mpg123.
you can find streamripper at
http://www.bigfreakinserver.com/master/streamripper.php3

Cool, it's just remembering the times every time I use a song with an
mpg123 command in a script will either run them all at once, or just play
the last song. One would have to put the sleep command after each one, but
how long is the trouble, how to have it determine the length, so whenever I
make a list of mp3's to play, it would eliminate the gap between when two
start by starting the next onea little before the first ends, but not start
tons of songs at a time.

You can determine immediately if freeatlast has a POP server in
your area by going to:
http://www.freeatlast.com
select registration. It will ask you for your area code and first
three numbers of your phone number. If there is a server in your
area you will get a 'Congratulations' screen and then be asked to
download their freeatlast.exe program.
I live in a small town in southern NJ and had two dialup numbers local to me,
both numbers worked. It is worth a try.
Good luck.

Is there a toll free provider that works every where in the U.S. yet? Is
there a way to use that service freeway that plays ads to initiate an
internet connection for a short while when I get DSL some day from a remote
location to set my linux machine to answer the modem line, and shut that
down when I don't need it? I might just get rid of the second line, and
would need this, so it never answers voice calls, so I could get on the
net, set it to answer, and hang up to dial to it then? Is there a better
way to do it so people don't get the loud noise in their ear if they call
my voice line that linux would be set to answer? Or is it best to just keep
that line for that use?
