Hi list. Just had a question for you people out there. I know there is a
real player for Linux, but can I listen to live content in Linux also?
Another thing. Has any of you heard of an isp called Freeatlast? Well, I
have it and it works through plain-old Dun, just like Freewwweb. There are
no monthly surveys to fill out, and I've never gotten disconnected. I've
never gotten a busy signal either, and the connection is really good. Just
figured all of us Linux/windows users could use this provider, since it
would just use ppp.

What areas do they cover, is it toll free? It seems that none of the free
providers I've tried are a local call. Is there a way to get that telephone
service freeway to initiate an internet connection? Sure I only get 3 hours
a month with it, but it's a lot of voice prompts to listen to ads before
the connection initiates. I don't know how long the ads are to put commas
in to keep pressing star to build up time and then connect, if the modem
would wind up timing out. I thought someone said there was a toll free isp
out there that you dial an 800 number, but I don't know what it is.

I went to freeatlast.com and checked out their registration
process. They have you provide your area code and exchange
to determine if they have service in your area. Then they
ask you to download a program freeatlast.exe, which configures
your WINDOWS machine and places you into a URL that lets you
register for your account.

Needless to say I was stymied after providing my phone information
and downloading the program. I think one method for getting
this service would be:

1) have a friend with a Win95 machine and a bit of spare time register
  for you.
2) Once he registers he or she can look at their network data to
copy down the
   - dialup phone number
  - the DNS IP addresses (should be two)
  - any other settings in their network configuration

Once they did this they'd have to restore their own network information.
They would also know your login and password for the account since
they registered for you so they'd have to be a GOOD friend or
a spouse.

I've tried the Freewwweb.com service but have never gotten anything
except a busy signal from my local dialup number. So from my point of
view their service is nonexistent. Maybe Freeatlast.com will be better
if I can ever find out how to register without running Windows.

If you have windows on the system, you can. I think there's a number on
their site. /etc/ppp/papsecrets shows them your password in clear text
anyway, so the security of the phone system is all there is to worry about,
what they have to gain through knowing the password is minimal, as they can
invade privacy without it anyway, the provider, that is. I wish papsecrets
stored passwords in encrypted form to tell the truth, but wouldn't know how
to implement that, much less having the password be changed when I change
unix password, I know it could be done, but how is beyond me, never set
that up yet.
