* Linux and the gui interface

I have obtained the Redhat 5.0 distribution of Linux and am preparing to
install it on a Pentium 90. A copy of Linux Life was wrapped around the
CD container as a promotion. Unfortunately, it focused on cool
developments in the gui interface within Linux. Suddenly, I am horrified
at the prospect of jumping into yet another environment en which all the
cool Web authoring tools, programming development tools, and other cutting
edge technologies are all based in a gui interface. I intend to use
Emaxspeak for my primary method of access, but while discussing
installation procedures with others who have gone before, I have gotten
the distinct impression that the x-Windows environment is no more
accessible to Emaxspeak than Windows used to be to the original DOS
screen readers. Is this accurate? Will I be locked out of X-Windows with
Emaxspeak? Am I about to repeat the frustrations so many of us went
through years ago when Windows overtook DOS? I hope not.

I also have the same concerns. I joined this list about a month ago to
pick up some details. I have some UNIX experience, I taught UNIX classes
at university level years ago, but haven't done much for several years.

What is a typical software setup? Will Emacspeach provide a good interface
and will I use the X-Windows systems software?

RedHat has a CD with the operating system, and another that is applications
and tools, does this CD come with the OS also?

By all I read RedHat has the easier setup and configuration, plus more
applications. What are the advantages or disadvantages of using say FreeBSD.

If off topic I apoligise.
Ron

for the difference between different distributions, see the
Distributions-HOWTO.

As a user moving from an MS environment, you might look at the
DOS-TO-Linux howto. (not sure of captilization on that one.)

and no, the relationship between X and UNIX is *not* like the
relationship between DOS and Windows

Greetings to Linuxeers,

What, please, is the difference between, for example, the Slackware and
Redhat releases of Linux and the accompanying software? How can one find
out for sure which flavour is right for running on a P90 portable PC which
has so far only known the sugar-coated experience of MS Windows? If the
answers to these questions are long and technical, I'm really only looking
for suggestions as to where to look up the explanation.

Related to this is the likely obstacle of the X-windows GUI operating
environment. I freely confess my ignorance of UNIX and similar systems.
Is the connection between UNIX and X-windows comparable to the past between
MS-DOS and MS Windows? What then is the behaviour of Emacs and EmacSpeak
in these circumstances? I apologise in advance for enquiring about things
surely well known and understood by most others.

Thanks,

Robin Tew, London UK
