I have an Esata card which debian 9.6 (kernel 4.9.0-8) doesn't seem to see. I want to upgrade to the newest stable kernel, 4.14, to see if that works.
What would be bhest method for doing this. Build from source using debian's .config? Or, perhaps, would I be best installing a rolling release like arch and see if that works.

Better yet, there is the backport of the 4.18.6 kernel which is
available precompiled. Instructions to use it are available on
https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/
I am running stretch (debian 9.6)
I attempted to follow the instructions linked above.
1. Add
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian buster-backports main
to /etc/apt/sources.list
2. apt-get udpate
3. Got this message:

You actually rather want stretch-backports.
buster-backports will be the packages backported to buster (which is not
released yet)

You have searched for packages that names contain 4.18.6 in suite(s) stretch-backports, all sections, and architecture(s) amd64.
Sorry, your search gave no results
Are you sure your information is correct.

The package is actually numbered linux-image-4.18.0 for compatibility
with previous uploads.
