Hello I want to install arch on my laptop. I would like to use a
window manager rather than a full blown desktop because I'm limited on
space. I would also like to setup a accessible login prompt. I would
like to try my hand at i3. I tryed ratpoison and I could never get
firefox-esr sound to work. Also how do you save speakup settings
between reboots. It always resets my speech rate when using speakup.

I save my speakup settings by calling a script /bin/setspeakup
from within rc.local.

This script contains lines such as:

echo 6 > /speakup/soft/freq
echo 7 > /speakup/soft/pitch
echo 2 > /speakup/soft/vol
echo 1 > /speakup/spell_delay
echo 3 > /speakup/soft/rate
echo 122 zee > /speakup/i18n/characters
echo 90 ZEE > /speakup/i18n/characters
chmod 666 /speakup/key_echo

This gives me the slow default speakup voice during the initial part
of the boot process, but changes to my preferred voice near the end.

So how would I handle the login greater? Maybe I could just do it how
I do it login with speakup and start i3 with startx. But then is orca
accessible to i3.

Hello, Didier here.

I just checked on Slint, installing i3 for the first time

It can be started with startx (in Slint, I just selected it
typing session-chooser) and yes orca works with i3 as long
as the apps you use are accessible. This is of course
the case for Firefox.

Only caveat: in Slint I had to type orca& from a terminal
to get it started. I didn't investigate why (yet) as I am
busy doing other things.

Which distribution are you using?

I would also love to know how to install QT-AT-SPI that was one of the
headaches I have to deal with because I want to use mumble.

With speakup, would one need a hardware synthesizer?

Exactly what is a window manager? Is that gnome, or mate?

In Arch it's in the AUR, named qt-at-spi (lower case letters).

To install a package from the AUR (Arch User repository)
read this article from the Arch Wiki:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_User_Repository

I just installed mumble in Slint to check, it doen't seem accessible
at all. Skint shpis Qt4, maybe you'll have better results with
Arch that ships Qt5, I don't know.

If Peter Vagner reads this post, he could shed more light
as he is the packager of qt-at-spi for Arch.

Not at all, you can use the software synthesizer.

For your information, I attach the script that manages the
espeakup daemon in Slint. I assume that there is systemd
service doing something similar in Arch.

Would I put this in /etc/speakup if I wanted to use it.

It was accesible in sonar so I will have to try it in arch sadly I
don't have access to my arch box because were moving and its in
storage. Also when using JACK if you could check will it brake orca?
If you have a skype I would try and contact you on there to talk about
more things with arch. And also try and rout audio through jack using
skype.

Mate or Gnome are desktops.

A desktop include several components, among which
a window manager whose task is to manage the windows on the
screen : create them, move them, resize them, lose them etc.

As an an example, by default MATE uses Marco as window manager,
but can also use compiz, Gnome now uses Mutter.

I can hardly answer, not being an Arch user.

However, in the list of files shipped in the espeakup
package for Arch:
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/espeakup/
I see that there are files named:
/usr/lib/systemd/system/espeakup.service
and also a configuration file:
/usr/lib/modules-load.d/espeakup.conf

I'd have a look at the latter.

I have a skype account which is didier.spaier but am usually not
connected.

I never used JACK, maybe I will try, but that would be in
a few days.

Feel free to send me an email at this address

<my first name> at slint dot fr.

Hi,

Speakup settings are stored on your hard disk at
/sys/accessibility/speakup/. There are several ways to get values in
those files, of course.

I'm still using rc.local, so I just poke some values there.

Also, I login on the console, so Speakup starting via systemctl works
perfectly well for me. I launch my graphical environment via startx.

Just some thoughts for you. Good luck on the install!

I haven't used i3. Looks interesting.

Wouldn't you just load it via ~/.xinitrc ?

So, it's in the AUR. Is there something beyond installing the package
using some pacman frontend like pacaur or yaourt?

No. You can use espeak, including espeak-ng, though the latter may be
trickier to install. Once espeak is installed and functioning, you
install espeakup and enable it via systemd.

I assume that yes according to this page:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc

Caveat: I am still not an Arch user ;)

FYI in Slint I provide the small script session-chooser
to help setting the default user session, attached.

It sets .xinirc and several login managers.

It works with i3, at least when using startx.

It uses a Python script user_xsession.py, also attached.

It seems only one attachment was transmitted to the list.

user_xsession.py is attached to this message. I have
renamed it user_xsession.py.txt, just in case some rule
forbids to send a file whose name ends in .exe, .bin,
whatever.
