Mark, you can also use Nama for trimming files. Like
Willem's dae, Nama uses ecasound for the heavy lifting.
And older but usable version of Nama can be found in
official packages for Ubuntu/Debian/Devuan distributions.
Here are the Nama commands to remove the first ten seconds
of raw.mp3, and generate a file lecture-2016-4-1.mp3:
nama -t
create lecture-2016-4-1
add-track lecture
import raw.mp3
set-region 10 END
mixdown
start
quit
