Hi.  The easiest way to stop your display manager from loading is to
change the link in /etc/rc2.d from S??yourdisplaymanager to
K??yourdisplaymanager.  Since I don't know what display manager you are
using, I have to be that general.
On my system, I use gdm.  I would change S99gdm to K99gdm in /etc/rc2.d
to keep Debian from starting the display manager.  Then, I can use
startx from a text console to start X-windows.
