My example is from Xandros, Debian based distribution. mv /etc/rc2.d/S99kdm /etc/rc2.d/no.S99kdm worked for me. I like to login in text mode first in case there is anyting that needs to be done without X-windows running. You can switch to text console from X-windows. Use Ctrl-Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-F2 etc. F1 is function key one, F2 is the second one etc. When in text mode you can execute /etc/rc2.d/S99kdm stop to stop X-windows, move the above mentioned file and you are in business.
