I am trying to get garnome up and running and with it, of course, X. can
somebody using debian remind me how one keeps X from starting at boot. I though
i remembered it as being to not have xdm on your system, but neither apt-get or
dpkg like the idea of my getting rid of xdm and leaving the main package. I do
know how to get out of X if I do boot up with it, but I would prefer not to do
so at this stage.
Thanks.

Hi. I didn't have a problem removing xdm, but you can just remove or
rename the link in /etc/rc2.d. Note: this assumes you are still booting
into run level 2.
Hope this helps.

just remove the system startup scripts for kdm and xdm etc etc
gzip the main script in /etc/init.d so that rc.d thinks it ain't there
and type the following.
update-rc.d xdm remove

I believe the canonical way is to edit /etc/inittab and change:
id:5:initdefault
so that it becomes ...
id:3:initdefault
Change the '5' to a '3', in other words.

Well, Janina, your solutin is the simplest so far.
I don't have the line you give, but i have
id:2:initdefault:
which makes sense if 2 is my default run level.
Can I change that from 2 to 5 without causing a problem?
Thanks.

Oops, I wrote it backwards in my reply, didn't I? All the way through! Must be
time for more coffee ... or to stop drinking the stuff completely, one of the
two.

almost right janina,
the line should look like this.
id:2:initdefault:
for debian at least.
hth.

Hi. I',m sure your solution will work in Redhat, but she is using
Debian. Debian treats run levels differently than Redhat.

Actually, changing to run level 3 from run level 2 did work.
Thanks.
