Hello,
Has anyone figured out any magical way of cutting and pasting between
virtual consoles in Linux? I know it is possible with the mouse and it is
supported by the linux console driver. But, I don't think there is any
keyboard equivalent.
Thanks.

Speakup has this feature, it actually uses the same buffer as the
mouse cut and paste.

Speakup has a cut and paste mode so if you're using that no problem.
If not, I don't know of any.

If you use BRLTTY you can do that too. Otherwise I don't think there's
anything that allows you to do that from the keyboard.

Hello,
How about cutting and pasting between virtual windows produced by the
"screen" utility.
Thanks.

The Screen utility already has a copy-and-paste mechanism.
Assuming the default key bindings, do "ctrl-a [" to enter Screen's
review mode. Use the vi-like keystrokes to move to the place from
which to begin the copy, then hit "space". Next, move to the place
where the copy should end, and hit "space" again to save the region
into the buffer. Now, move to the virtual window into which you want
to paste. "ctrl-a ]", pastes the buffer content into the new window,
at the cursor position.

You can also use GNU screen, which gives you multiplexed virtual
consoles as well. I don't know how well speakup deals with it, but
once you have it installed (apt-get install screen for Debian users;
grab the appropriate RPM from rpmfind.net or your CDs for RPM-based
distros; check www.gnu.org for source), you can run your apps inside
screen sessions and do cut/paste/scrollback with the keyboard.
It also allows you to detach and resume sessions. Very useful piece
of software. =)

You can read the contents of a virtual console via the /dev/vcs
interface. It looks like you can use an IOCTL to emulate the
"writing" of characters to /dev/vcs to emulate the mouse function.
It's probable that the underlying mechanisms have changed in
kernel 2.5/2.6.
