Hi all,
Since a long time I'm looking for a synthetiser which will be capable of
speaking in French. This evening maybe I have found one but the web page
giving the description is in deutsch and I don't speak deutsch. I give you
the url :
http://www.etex.de/d_speechbox.htm
Has someone here ever seen this synthetiser ? Do you think it will be
capable of running under linux ? And someone who speaks deutsch can read
the web page and translate the specifications for me ?
Thanks in advance.

They say its OS independent. Seems to be controlled via
rs232, so if they give the specs of that api away, it
should work just fine.

Well, there isnt much there. They claim to support 6 languages.
Physical measurements are 10x7x3 cm.
You can buy a boxed version, or a version for onboard use...
It needs around 6v power, and is feed through a external
powersupply or through pin 5 and 9 of tthe rs232.
It seems they have no usb version :(((
I'll contact them now to get more information...

OK, thanks a lot Mario. I think this synthetiser is very expensive but it
should be a great method for me to have a french tts if we can obtain the
specs in order to make it run under Linux !
Then Mario if you have more information from them let me know !
And an idea : Why not connecting a such box to a PDA running Linux ? I
think this box can be connected to a Nokia mobilphone running Epoc.
Thanks.

Er, you know that you can convince viavoice to speak french, do you?

sure, will do.

I somehow suspect the device is too large to be useful in such a way.
I'd prefer a pcmcia-card sized thing for instance.
I mean, a synth shouldnt be half the size of my whole laptop :)

Hi,
Yes I know that ViaVoice can speak french but unfortunatly it doesn't work
with all sound chips. for example it doesn't work on my laptop which has a
VIA onboard sound chip. It says approximatly two or three words and then
crashes. then in a such case a hard synthetizer would be a better choice.

Mario,
Perhaps you know about a pcmcia-card sized synthetizer or sound card ? Does
a such thing exist today ?
Thanks.

Wait a moment, I thought ViaVoice could only speak American English.
Is this trickery documented somewhere or could someone please explain it
to me? Is it possible to make it speak even more languages?

Some time ago when VV on Linux was new, I was on the VV list.
Viavoice for Linux was only release with American English. The IBM folk on the
list said, "Substituting other dictionaries probably will work, but is
unsupported."
The source of other dictionaries was VV for Windows - a friend's computers or
(for those who speak with English or Australian accents) the Windows Viavoice
SDK on the IBM website.
UK English and German in particular were mentioned as "probably working," but
the implication was there that many other languages would work too.
