I had a similar problem and I believe setting the display variable fixed it.
DISPLAY=111.222.333.444:0
or possibly
export DISPLAY=111.222.333.444:0
Substitute your ip address in place of 111.222.333.444.
If you are on a local network, substitute the network address,
LIKE 192.168.0.2:0
The word DISPLAY is an environment variable and must be in all caps.
The colon zero after the ip refers to the first monitor screen on that machine.

The 'correct' setting is
export DISPLAY=:0
However, I think it's important to find why it's not getting set
automatically. "Just setting it" probably won't work, and if it does it still
isn't fixing the real problem.

This error means that your DISPLAY environment variable isn't pointing to a
usable X server. There are a few ways you can resolve this.
You can use trplayer rather than realplay. It's a command-line version of the
Real Player.
You can install X and then point to it. Once X is running, you point to it by
doing:
export DISPLAY=:0
Note that, since you're not pointing to it from an X session, you must
authorize such access with the command:
xhost +localhost
This authorization must be done either from within an X session (probably
difficult) or from within an X session setup script, e.g.
"/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0".
You can set up a pretend X server, attach it to some other (not 0) X server
number (I'll use 2), and point to it. You do this with the following commands:
Xvfb :2 -ac -screen 2 800x600x32 -fn 7x14
export DISPLAY=:2
Note that no xhost authorization is required if you do it this way.

hey mark,
nice to catch up with you again,
however, wny not try downloading and installing trplayer from the
speakup ftp site at ftp://linux-speakup.org
in the /pub/linux/goodies/trplayer directory.

Subject: re: assistance required. can't open display message.
Hello:
I am getting the following error message ocasionally when I am trying to
install package in particular the realplayer package.
error: can't open display.
I am prity sure that I compiled the VGA mode into the kernel which happens
to be 2.4.5 under slackware 8.0.
I am not sure if this is a X-windows problem and if so how can I avoid it.
I seem to recall that this was the same error message that came up when I
attempted to install and setup X-windows itself. Is there any good
documentation for blind users that will allow us to set up X-Windows?
I would appreciate any assistance.
thanks and regards
Mark Muscat
