Well the page doesn't work on edbrowse either.
I saved it to a file and checked the file type.
It is gzip compressed, and when deflated via gunzip,
it gives proper html.
Trouble is, neither lynx nor edbrowse knows to deflate it.
The order to deflate is usually given in the http header.
We are told that it is compressed,
and which tool to use to expand it.
But I looked at their header and there is no such command.
It says, among other things,

content-type: text/html

That means it's text, to be rendered as html, no compression.
Well that's what it's suppose to be.
There are some secret codes however, which probably tell microsoft explorer
to uncompress it.
The page comes from a microsoft server.
So once again, Microsoft sucks!

I'm not sure there is any way arond it.
In edbrowse, I could probably add some code to force gunzip
at the user's request, whether the header says to or not.
Or I could learn the secret Microsoft code to uncompress,
if that's what's going on.
I think lynx users are going to be out of luck for a while.

Karl

Hi.
Thanks Karl.
I am glad to hear it isn't me.
I wrote pricewatch and asked them why they changed their
web site. It probably won't help. It is interesting
they are using a gnu program to do their compression.

By the way, what is edbrowse? I haven't heard of that browser before.

Thanks
phil

Karl:

By any chance did the Price Watch header brag about what
authoring tool created this monstrosity?

For example, does it say generated by Front Page, or some such?

This is what lynx http://www.pricewatch.com -head returns:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0
Content-Location: http://www.pricewatch.com/Default.htm
Date: Mon, 06 May 2002 18:22:20 GMT
Content-Type: text/html
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Last-Modified: Mon, 15 Apr 2002 15:56:31 GMT
ETag: "d4e7e1c96e4c11:855"
Content-Length: 822

However, this is what the site now looks like as viewed by Lynx:

_____

Price Watch ® - Street Price Search Engine

   FRAME: search
   FRAME: Results

Sorry - please use a frames enabled browser

_____

So, I guess this was all a big blooper. Somebody probably told them
"your site does not work with XYZ browser" and they corrected the
whole gzipped file mess.

Best Regards,

I never used pricewatch.com before but just tested it with lynx a moment
ago.

It's not as bad as it seems. It does give you that confusing message

FRAME: search
FRAME: Results

Sorry - please use a frames enabled browser

I used right arrow key on the first FRAME labeled "search" and it took me
to the next page with the following:

PRICE WATCH ® USB camera_______________ Search Site About Specials
[fus.gif] Software [fus.gif] Not Exactly New [fus.gif]
Electronics [fus.gif] Home

I entered "USB camera" and it took me to next page where I was able to
link to many sites with products listed.

I do not have time for browsing with GUI to verify the results from lynx
right now but I hope it works for you guys.

Hi.
I am glad it is back. I used (gag) internet explorer
this morning to send them a message letting them
know that it was no longer accessable with lynx.
I am amazed that they put it back to "normal".

Suggest first opening up lynx, then type (*) then type upper-case l then
go to pricewatch.com. You may have different results.
