Ok, my cable modem connection seems to be working fine as far as it goes;
I am including here what I get when I enter "pump -i eth0 --status" since
the output is relatively short. I was a bit concerned about whether the
lines that have 0.0.0.0 for next server were normal or not.
My biggest problem now is that I can't figure out how to get this to
happen at boot time. Once I boot, I have to type "pump -i eth0" each time
to start it. I've looked at the man page several times and still can't
find anything that indicates how this is to be accomplished.

Hi
Since you are using debian you should try to add your setup to
/etc/netwrk/interfaces, that file does not have the same syntax as the one
you are using below, but fairly close, try man interfaces for the
syntax.
If that doesn't work create a file in /etc/init.d/ called mynet that
contains the line "pump -i eth0 --status" (without the quotes of
course), then symlink this file into rcS.d, like so:
cd /etc/rcS.d; ln -s ../init.d/mynet S40mynet
of course the choise of the filename is your own.
This should get you network in all runlevels.

Actually, I think I don't want --status on that line, as that will
cause it only to check the status and not set it up if I understand it
correctly.
then symlink this
file into rcS.d, like so: > cd /etc/rcS.d; ln -s ../init.d/mynet S40mynet
This looks similar to what I did to get brltty running. However, that file
was a .sh file and started with #!/bin/sh. Do I want to follow that
pattern also in this case or not?

Yes you want that, it would probably work without, but better safe than
sorry :)

Yes, that worked, although now when I type "pump -i eth0 --status" from
the command line I get "operation failed", but the interface is definitely
up and working. Having looked at the interfaces file and man page, it
probably would be more organized within debian to use that approach, but
it may take me a while to figure out exactly how to do it, so I'll just
stick with the mynet.sh file and its symlink for now.

Hi. Do you have a script to start pump in your
/etc/init.d directory? If so, the system should start it when you
boot or switch to a run level whitch starts it.
I'm not sure about pump. When I set up my cable modem, I used
dhcpcd.

Hi, Kenny! No, I don't believe there's a shell script, and it doesn't
appear that debian has put anything in explaining how to fit it in with
their setup, though I could be overlooking. In fact, there isn't even a
/etc/pump.conf though I certainly can create my own if I need to do so.
There is a mention in the "interfaces" man page that you can use that file
with pump, but then it goes on to say that some programs may be looking
for a file other than the interfaces file anyway. I did look at using
dhcp-client, but there was a lot in the dhclient.conf file that I wasn't
sure about. For now it is working, but I eventually would like to get it
better integrated into the system.

Hi. I need to worn that I got my system working without help
from my cable company or knowing anything about DHCP. My cable
company panics when I mention "Linux."
Just like you, I couldn't figure out pump. I tried dhcp-client and
couldn't figure it out either. Finally, I installed dhcpcd.
It has a script in /etc/init.d and a config file in
/etc/dhcpc.
I just added the line
OPTIONS='-h cc771963-a'
to the end of config. The single quotes are important.
All my cable company wants is my system to use the computer name they
gave me (cc771963-a) as the hostname.
That's what the line in the config file does.
The host name is just for DHCP. My system's host name is still "learning."
I couldn't get the network configured with the /etc/network/interfaces
file, but since the dhcpcd script runs during boot, it gets configured
then.
Hope this helps.

hdcp-client should work good as well.
wswe got a link up with that package within 10 minutes or so.
Under debian you have a file call /etc/network/interfaces
using
iface <device> hdcp
should do the trick, when called via ifup it should d the dhcp-request
itself.
As ifup is called during startup, that should do the trick.

Hi. I never could get that file to work. Everything I read said
/etc/network/interfaces should have the line
iface eth0 inet dhcp
but it never worked.
That is why I was glad
dhcpcd had a script in init.d.

This is the correct syntax
you probably need one or 2 extra paramters,
here's the setup we used on one linux-box connecting to a dsl-link using
dhcp/client
/etc/network/interfaces says:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
hostname stratus.demon.nl
\replace the hostname as listed here, the auto command tells the ifup
command to auto-configure the interface upon calling
/etc/dhclient.conf lists no option
Hope this info helps

Hi. It sounds like something is wrong with your apt database.
Apt-get install dhcpcd works fine on both my systems.
What happens if you run
dpkg --audit?

Well, dhcpcd would have been my first choice, but when I try to use
debian's apt-get feature to install it I'm told it doesn't have an
available version. Of course, that doesn't mean I can't get it and use it,
but would be a little more effort.

Hi!
When I run dpkg --audit nothing happens; I just get the prompt after a few
seconds. I wonder though. After I started running the test version of
debian I was told to take some lines out of my sources.list and I wonder
if something got taken out that would allow me to access that package. I
am getting lots of upgrades, though, so my system is functioning.

Hi. I just upgraded this system to testing. I know what you mean about
strange errors and messages.
My sources.list just has
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian woody main contrib non-free
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US woody/non-US main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org stable/updates main contrib non-free
# Uncomment if you want the apt-get source function to work
deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free
The sources.list file and how to upgrade seem to be subjects of debate on
Debian-user. I upgraded my desktop with
apt-get dist-upgrade and had to run it and "apt-get upgrade" a few
times before I stopped getting errors. When I upgraded this laptop,
I used dselect and it seemed to worked the first time.
