What about a small bit of logic which would only sound a tone when the LED
state changes, say a double tone (beep beep) when a led is switched on and a
single tone when off. Each LED could have a different tone, low for shift,
medium for insert and high for numlock. higher

the Kinesis Contoured Keyboard does exactly that, except it uses the same tone
for cap, scroll, num, and insert. great kbd, too. www.kinesis-ergo.com.
