The recommended way would be to use the pstoedit utility, which is available
for DOS and MS Windows as well as UNIXoidal OSes. Note that this utility
is a filter that requires an external PostScript processing engine as well;
usually people use the gs (Ghostscript) utility for that functionality.
pstoedit can take PostScript (and several other input forms) and output
several editable forms including column-formatted ASCII text and popular
word-processing formats.

Note that under Linux you can probably use gs with some option flags on
the command line to accomplish plain ASCII output, but that's probably not
a good option for blinux users, since the standard gs build for Linux
assumes you use the X Window System, and it may be frustrating to try to
tailor its behavior from the default with existing documentation... Using
pstoedit will give you a simple and powerful command line interface for
controlling gs use.

  One way is to use ps2ascii, witch uses ghostscript to convert from .ps
to ascii. Ps2ascii look llike follow

-----
#!/bin/sh -f
# Extract ASCII text from a PostScript file. Usage:
#	ps2ascii [infile.ps [outfile.txt]]
# If outfile is omitted, output goes to stdout.
# If both infile and outfile are omitted, ps2ascii acts as a filter,
# reading from stdin and writing on stdout.
if ( test $# -eq 0 ) then
	gs -q -dNODISPLAY -dNOBIND -dWRITESYSTEMDICT -dSIMPLE ps2ascii.ps - quit.ps
elif ( test $# -eq 1 ) then
	gs -q -dNODISPLAY -dNOBIND -dWRITESYSTEMDICT -dSIMPLE ps2ascii.ps $1 quit.ps
else
	gs -q -dNODISPLAY -dNOBIND -dWRITESYSTEMDICT -dSIMPLE ps2ascii.ps $1 quit.ps >$2
fi

What might be the easiest way to read a file with the .ps extension under
linux with speech? Are there any simple filters out there that convert
post script format to plain text or ASCII or even html?

Thanks,
<Steve>
