for brian who asked about a way to install linux without sighted assistance...
get the following file from sunsite.unc.edu...
/pub/Linux/distributions/slackware/rootdsks/text.gz.
goto the following directory and also get rawwrite.exe and gzip.exe and a bootdisk image
/pub/Linux/distributions/slackware/bootdsks.144
this is a text based installation so all ya gotta do is put in ya boot disk hit enter once or twice depending on which boot disk ya chose, then put in the root disk image disk and when it stops ya are being prompted to log in
log in by typing root and hitting enter
then type the following to order ya modem to pick up and allow ya log in from the second dos machine
echo ata > /dev/cua1
or whatever com port ya modem is on
type the following on the dos box to make it connect to the linux box
atd
after ya hear the modems connect ya type the following on the linux machine
agetty 38400,19200,9600,2400,1200 /dev/cua1
that will give ya the login prompt on your dos box
log in as root and then the installations the same as if ya did it from ya already up and running linux system
good luck
