Has anyone actually made linux talk on any palm top?
NOt just speculated that it might be possible, but actually made it talk?

We went around this block about H P palm ops that run Dos5. Many asserted that
their favorit dos screen readers would work. Then we found that many had been
tryed, but none had succeeded.

I am very eager to have a talking hand heald, but not eager to buy one,
and have it not talk.

Maby Minix would be a better, or at least easier, choice for a handheld.
Most pdas have an audio device which would be of high enough quality to
talk but I doubt any of them could meet the storage requirements for a
software synth.

So who makes hand helled with lots of ram, an external keybord port,
that will run linux?
Do they need an external synth, or will they talk through their own speeker?

the linux kernel is pretty small-- and the graphics stuff is
not part of the base system 
 unlike systems like NT.

Versions of Linux 2.0 can run Java bytecodes, so what you
ask for pretty much exists.

Linux for handhelds

Hello,

I am interested in the possibility of a cut-down version of Linux 
to run on a hand-held computer without visual display
(or just with a small LCD text display).  
Thus all the graphics stuff can be ditched!  
However I need to be able to run Java,
and I need sound output for my speech synthesiser.
