Well it will take a 386 with 4 meg of ram minimum to run linux but
personally I would not run it on less than a 486 66 with 16 meg ram. It
is just to slow. You don't have to tie up your pentium with linux you can
actually boot into any OS you want by partitioning your drives for each OS
On my pent I have windows 95, Linux and yes even old MSdos plan. This way
you can boot into anything. As for the device driver for Emacs speak the
only speach access software out there you have to right that driver in
emacs as far as I understand it. If it was as simple as writing it in C
or C++ I think there would be one writen. As it is right now if you don't
have Dectalk you don't have speech. There is a nice braille term program
if you have a braille display. I hear the people who wrote the braille
screen reader were thinking about writing a speech out put but then I have
seen nothing of that since I wrote them about 6 months ago.

Hello there,

I have been monitoring this list for five months and I am inpressed with the
caliber of the discussions.

So now I feel comfortable enough to toss my hat into the ring and post a few
questions.

My experiences with Linux or Unix has come from the Net or through the
college I work for. However this experience has come via a terminal emulator.

I have been thinking about setting up a computer at home to play with Linux.
I don't really want to tie up my P166, so I was thinking of using a 286 or a
386 that I can pick up rather ceap these days. Any ideas?

Also what should I be considering for a synthesizer? I have the means of
accessing a multitude of internal or external devices. ie. acsent pc,
acsent sa, Artic 215, 615, or a Echo internal card.

The latest discussion in regards to Artic, does cause me some concern.

I am currently in my third year of Information systems, and have enough
experience with Assembler and C plus plus to try and tackcle writing a
device driver. so if any one out there has the source code for a driver, I
would be more than greatful to have it.

Many thanks in advance,

Ken-- you clearly *dont* understand it.
The device driver for emacspeak is written in TCL --not in "emacs" as you put
  it.
And the reason why emacspeak is so portable is specifically because of the
above; the driver runs stably on every platform that runs TCL.

Command:

agetty 38400 ttyS0 vt100

Put it in the "inittab" file ("/etc/inittab"); after first viewing the
man page for the program.

That's exactly what I do here.

This part is easy. Once linux is setup, you'll have speech easy,
(assumign you set it up to use the serial ports) But if you wish to
install linux yourself, and are using a terminal type setup, then you'll
need to enable the ports before they'll work properly.   A line like;
agetty ttys0 38400 vt100 (or something like that) will do the trick. (I
may have reversed the vt100 and 38400) Then you can login from the serial
port just as you would from the console. Hope this helps.

Http://softcon.com offers web pages for a reasonable rate, and will even
create pages for you at *very* fair rates. Check us out today if you're
looking for a home for your web pages.

what about connecting via another computer.
i would like to run linux also, but i am waiting on a 2.1g drive.
How do you set it up so you can run linux from a

boot manger and have it connect to there other computer, so you can use a
terminal prog to get speech?

This is how I do it right now. I have both linux and Dos on two machines
both with Ethernet cards. I run Linux as the server and I have dos just
as a client. I have programs in dos like pine lynx telnet and ftp. I
have also mounted linux drives in dos so that I can edit files on my linux
server from dos. If you want I can send you all the program names I use
and if you need I can even help you find the newest copys of them. You
can also hook straight with a null modem cable using a normal comm program
but that is so slow and you won't be able to get all the cool stuff like
mounted linux drives in dos. However if you go the way of using a comm
program you can also use nettammer which I know a lot of modem users are
using to web search but then that is not realy needed if you are running
something like lynx in linux.
