what is the price of linux operating system in the us , after taxes and
commision ?
do i need extra litrature to start working with it ? is there a knowledge
needed in operating linux ? do i need to purchace more books or is all the
info i need included in the linux package?
i know dos and windows 95.

Linux will cost you only a little money, but quite a bit of time.  You
can learn how to use and administer the system from the manual pages
and other documentation.  Typically, you will investigate programs as
the need arises.  You should expect to still be learning things two
years from now.

I got the "Developer's Resource" set of six cdroms from InfoMagic for
$25 plus postage.  The only printed documentation is a small pamphlet,
but there is a good collection of computer-readable documentation on
the discs.

InfoMagic releases a new version about three times a year.  My own
copy of the most recent set (September 1996) is loaned out, so I
cannot refer to it at the moment.  However, here are the general files
on the November 1995 version, which should be similar:

There are general guides to the disks in the set in \readme.1st and
\help\whereami.txt.  Matt Welsh's step by step guide to installing
Slackware is in \help\quicksta.txt.  (This is slightly dated.  For
example, you no longer need to decompress the root disks before
writing them out.  However, it is still a "must-read".)

More general information is in the Linux "Frequently Asked Questions"
list in \slackwar\docs\linux.faq\linux-fa.asc.  Longer descriptions
are in "HOWTO" documents found in \howto.  Note particularly
\howto\hardware, which lists which kinds of hardware are supported by
Linux, \howto\meta-faq, which points to sources of information (that
is, a more extensive version of this paragraph), and \help\index,
which is a list of the HOWTO documents with short descriptions.  The
Linux installation HOWTO, \howto\installation, is another version of
Matt Welsh's installation instructions.
