Hello,
I've just been looking at the Redhat site. They make a lot of the GUI in
Redhat 7.2. It uses Gnome 1.4. I assume the GUI is inaccessible for now. Can
it do anything that you can't do in console mode? Is the Mozilla browser
usable in console mode?
I will have to start my installation with a floppy, since I can't boot from
my cd-rom. Does the disk set that Redhat sells for $60 include an
installation boot floppy? Can I add brltty to that floppy so I can have
Braille output as soon as possible?
Thanks a lot.

Nicolas,
Nice to see you on this list. I've just been reading the brltty manual. I
also downloaded the complete brltty package, but what do you know. I'm
having trouble getting Windows to decompress it, even though the beast
claims that it can do so.
Thanks for all your answers and for your work on brltty. It is very
important for those of us who are deaf as well as blind.

John:
It's hard to advise you when you only hint at what you use to access
computer interfaces. You mention braille. Well and good. You will not
install using braille, because you will not have brltty running, at least
not with the installation disks you get from Redhat.
If you can also use speech, get the speakup enabled Redhat 7.2 iso images
from ftp://www.linux-speakup.org/pub/speakup/disks/redhat/7.2/

The BRLTTY manual might be lacking behind I'm afraid.
Once you can get inside the archive, you'll find all the instructions on how
to create BRLTTY enabled installation bootdisks in the /bootdisks
subdirectory. You should then be able to boot with the floppy and go on
with the installation using the CD afterwards.
I think Dave Mielke (the current BRLTTY maintainer) had plans about putting
BRLTTY enabled floppy images on his website. Maybe you could try to ping
him about that.

Janina,
It's good news indeed that brltty can be put on a boot disk. We are all
learning. This list has been very helpful. I hope soon to be able to answer
some questions, instead of always asking them.

Indeed. GUI-only users can never hope to access the full power
of Linux. No GUI, on any OS, can ever hope to provide the
flexibility and options you can get through the shells and
associated tools, using the Unix modular toolset philosophy.
These issues have been discussed before on this list, in detail.
See the list archives for more info.

And save your money. Unless you have some use for the paper
documentation that comes with the boxed sets, or want phone
support (they would probably want to walk you through using some
GUI configuration tools), you could do just as well with the
cheap CD's sold by other vendors like cheapbytes.com (see the
blinux FAQ for details, including how to get online
documentation). If you have a fast connection and a CD writer,
you can even download the ISO CD images for free.

People buy MicroShaft for compatibility, but get incompatibility and
instability instead. This is award winning "innovation". Find

Redhat 7.2 still offers console mode and the apps the go with it (lynx,
pine, etc...). In addition, it offers gui tools and x-windows. I believe
you can choose not to install ny of the X stuff.
If you're looking for a talking installer disk, check out the speakup web
site
They have installation boot floppies for a few Linux distributions. If
you have one of the synthesizers supported by Speakup, this should get you
started.

Thans for your suggestions. A student from the nearby UW-Madison just got
Redhat 7.1, which he had on cd, installed for me with brltty. I'll upgrade
to 7.2 when i get used to this new kid.

Georgina,
Thanks for the invitation to the speakup list. However, i am deaf and don't
understand speech, so I'm sticking with Braille. I like Braille better
anyway.

Hi
I wondered if we'll see you on the Speakup Reflector? I think that you'll
have to get a sound card working but we do use text chat so the Speakup
Reflector might enable you to participate a little more. Look forward to
communicating with you.

Dave,
Thans for your suggestions. A student from the nearby UW-Madison just got
Redhat 7.1, which he had on cd, installed for me with brltty. I'll upgrade
to 7.2 when i get used to this new kid.

Hi
Exactly, that's the point I was making. You may need to get a sound card
working so that SpeakFreely will work but we do use text chat too on the
reflector, thus you'd be able to participate. I have brltty installed and
when my sound card decided to give up, well it was my newly compiled kernel,
I could still use my Braille display.

My sound works with the drivers that the kernel comes with, if it's good
enough. At least redhat automates a lot of the task, not sure where major
and minor numbers are derived from for devices to pass to the module
parameters. I never did get some of the scientific calculations howtos talk
about, as they don't explain them, especially the ramdisk word for bootdisks.

There must've been a misunderstanding somewhere. I don't have any Windows
utility for unpacking a Linux archive. In fact, I don't even use Windows at
all.
