xwindows question

Hi

I am running Debian and just installed xwindows, gnome, gnopernicus, etc.  Now of course it assumes I want xwindows as my default on boot which is not true, especially since gnopernicus is not working with brltty at this point.  So which file or files do I need to modify too have it come up at a console on boot and then I can start xwindows as I wish?

This is not specificaly X-windows question but here it goes:
file to change is
/etc/inittab

change line
id:5:initdefault:
to
id:2:initdefault:

that will change your system to run in run level 2 instead of 5 which is
traditionaly used for GUI login.

You may be right this is more of a straight linux question but...

However  inittab already reads
id:2:initdefault:

and it still comes up in xwindows so I am not sure where to go from here.
And of course my only access to the box at this point is through telnet as I
can't even switch to a readable console once gnome is up.

Then you need to remove or rename a link under /etc/rc2.d/S99kdm or
similar. My example is from Xandros, Debian based distribution.

mv /etc/rc2.d/S99kdm /etc/rc2.d/no.S99kdm
worked for me. I like to login in text mode first in case there is
anyting that needs to be done without X-windows running.

You can switch to text console from X-windows. Use Ctrl-Alt-F1 or
Ctrl-Alt-F2 etc. F1 is function key one, F2 is the second one etc.

When in text mode you can execute 
/etc/rc2.d/S99kdm stop
to stop X-windows, move the above mentioned file and you are in
business.

Hi.  The easiest way to stop your display manager from loading is to
change the link in /etc/rc2.d from S??yourdisplaymanager to
K??yourdisplaymanager.  Since I don't know what display manager you are
using, I have to be that general.
On my system, I use gdm.  I would change S99gdm to K99gdm in /etc/rc2.d
to keep Debian from starting the display manager.  Then, I can use
startx from a text console to start X-windows.

Modify  /etc/inittab so your default runlevel is 3.
This typically starts up all network services and text mode  login's but 
not your X server.
