I give up! If this is to be a list for newbies, I have to wonder if
anyone is on it! I have tried a dozen times to get subscribed. I got the
help message, as suggested, and it is as clear as mud, as it gives no
examples, and is as cryptic as the return mail. Is this list worth the
effort?
Anyone give the precise syntax this non-standard subscription requires?
Thanks,
Gary
P.S. I did write to a human yesterday--no answer. Yes, I tried a space,
- and |, but nothing pleases this program.

Well, I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about considering you
haven't given us any description of what you did or what was returned
to you. You should be able to send a message to
blinux-newbie-request@braille.uwo.ca with the word subscribe in the
message body. I think the subject line is alright as well. The list
will send a message of confirmation back to you which you will need to
reply to. Usually you can just hit 'r' or whatever your mailer uses
for replay and the confirmation number will be included in the subject
line.
good luck.

Hi, Kirk,
Excuse me, but the message I sent did include the return from the server.
It shows what came back--the last time, and what I sent. The system wants
a subscription in the form:
Subscribe [password] [digest|nodigest]-options address=
Now, I have tried many forms of this, and nothing works. Being an
intelligent person who has been onmany lists, including this one, I have
to conclude that this Newbie list is not very well designed for newbies!
Even after getting the help message, the syntax is still not clear, and I
still cannot get subscribed. I have to wonder how anyone does.
If you have not personally had experience with this nonstandard format on
a list, then you may not understand the problem. If you get a chance to
try it, let me know if you can make it work, and what syntax you used. I
was trying to subscribe for the digest form, plain (with no MIME
encoding), and hiding my address from spammers who regularly pirate these
lists.

Well, I just sent a message as I described to you to
blinux-newbie-request@braille.uwo.ca with subscribe digest on one line
in the body and received a confirmation message. I replied with a
blank reply and received a welcome message with instructions and
password back. I'm honestly not sure how it could be much easier.

Gary,
wrong list. You are posting your problems with blinux-newbie to blinux-list.
Try something like a message body looking like
subscribe your_password nodigest address=put_your_emailaddress_here
Send this mail to blinux-newbie-request@braille.uwo.ca
Best Regards
Hans

Thanks, Hans,
What I was trying to do was get the list in digest form, in plain text,
not in MIME, and with my own address suppressed so I get less SPAM.
I know where I am posting this, but I am having problems getting the list
to accept my subscription the way I prefer it. I will not mention it
again.

You can't send anything but a subscribe command to a list first if you're
not already a member. The only valid commands for a non-member are usually
subscribe and info. The reason you had so much trouble with the list is you
had no right to be sending many commands you sent. Those are reserved for
members of the list who have been confirmed and welcomed in.
