You can't send anything but a subscribe command to a list first if you're
not already a member. The only valid commands for a non-member are usually
subscribe and info. The reason you had so much trouble with the list is you
had no right to be sending many commands you sent. Those are reserved for
members of the list who have been confirmed and welcomed in.
