Same questions regarding Windows 2000 on a Thinkpad (or anywhere else, for
that matter).

Hi,
Here are my experiences with Redhat 6.2 and Windows 2000...
After an install of Redhat hosed the MBR, I ran `lilo -U' to uninstall
LILO (which also restores your original boot record). If this does not
work for someone, you can also boot from the Windows 2000 CD (or 4
diskettes) to "repair master boot record." I edited /etc/lilo.conf to put
LILO on /dev/hda2 (the Linux partition) instead of just /dev/hda (the
MBR) and ran `lilo' so my changes would take affect. Now the part
everyone cares about... I put my Linux boot sector into a file with:
`dd if=/dev/hda of=bootsec.lnx bs=512 count=1'
I coppied this to my windows 2000 partition (use a DOS floppy disk,
network, or what ever works for you) and then booted Windows 2000. From a
command prompt I made the c:\boot.ini editable via `attrib -s -h
c:\boot.ini' and then edited it with `notepad c:\boot.ini'.
In the [operating systems] section I added the line:
c:\bootsec.lnx="Linux"
I then saved the file, ran `attrib +s +h c:\boot.ini' to put the
attributes back the way they were, and I can now down arrow to Linux as
soon as I know the windows 2000 boot loader comes up and press enter to
have LILO loaded.
I of course include commands which are typed at the keyboard in quotes
like `command...' and you are not supposed to type the characters ` or '
as part of the command. ;)
Hope this helps,
Ivan.

Why not use other=/dev/hda1
label=win
to boot win2k? Does win2k care more about the boot sector than windows-98
did. I've been doing it this way awhile now.

Hi Brent,
Your suggestion may very well work under Windows 2000, but when I first
encountered the need to dual boot Redhat and Windows 2000, the `customer'
wanted to use the Windows 2000 boot loader. I have used your method
(other=/dev/hda1) for Windows 95/98/NT systems in the past and it has
workked just fine.
Ivan.

Windows ME will coexist with Linux in the same manner as WIndows 98 SE did.
The same applies to Win 2K.

Vic
