A silly question perhaps - but is there a more or less equivalent utility
for 1-2-1 contact through the msn service or indeed one of the other
services like it.

Hi!
If anyone hasn't already suggested this, I'd say do a google for
CenterIcq.
Besides Icq it can do Msn, Irc, Jabber and possibly something else. I
think it's a nice piece of software.
